Denver of the East, named after the city in Colorado, is now an unincorporated town on the western side of Lake Norman. It was a bustling gathering place and was incorporated in the 1800s. Unfortunately, the railroad chose not to come through Denver and it began to dry up like the pond for which it was originally named - Dry Pond.
The town consisted of a few houses, stores, and churches with a school, a barber shop, a post office, a bank and a cotton gin completing. Denver was primarily a farming community until the 1940s when the residents took jobs in the textile mills in Mooresville, Lincolnton, Cornelius, Maiden, and Mount Holly. The citizens failed to elect a local government for several years and the state legislature removed its incorporated status.
The coming of Lake Norman in 1963 and the new 4 lane Highway 16 into Charlotte has changed this little town. Now waterfront homes from $400,000 to multimillion dollar homes in Governors Island and Sailview dot the western shores of Lake Norman's 520 miles of shoreline. You will find a fine mixture of real estate in Denver NC.
We call it the "Quiet Side of the Lake".
